Various Artists. Putumayo Presents: French Caribbean. French Caribbean pop music still doesnt enjoy widespread popularity outside of France and Francophone Africa, but its harmonious melodies and rhythmic complexity rival other folk-pop hybrids marketed as world music, such as son cubano and Congolese soukous. Haiti, and to a lesser extent the overseas French ancillaries of Martinique and Guadeloupe, have made important contributions to post-1950s Caribbean popular music. The most important genre is konpa, which emerged in Haiti in the 1950s and was hugely influential throughout the French Caribbean up through the late 20th century. Your feedback. Essentially a bunch of sprightly tunes from Caribbean islands such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica and St Lucia which mix various Cuban and Congolese styles with New Orleans jazz and a hint of Parisian high-society pizzazz. Racing congas, rolling piano, ecstatic brass and cavernous acoustics combine to conjure a vision of the dance halls this music once came to life in. The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on , compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information. Warning .
