Fresh Wine for the Horses is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter, former Catherine Wheel frontman Rob Dickinson. Released in 2005, it features tracks that Dickinson wrote while a member of Catherine Wheel but never made it onto official releases, as well as new material written since the band's breakup in 2000. The release was supported by a tour of small venues across. Once the disappointment in the lack of adventure on Fresh Wine for the Horses washes away, it becomes apparent that Dickinson spent at least part of his time away becoming a sharper songwriter. Catherine Wheel songs, at their very worst, could be overwrought and insufferable, but Dickinson keeps it all in check, avoiding doe-eyed self-absorption and addressing a you with more frequency than ever. Rest assured, he did not learn the latter move from Coldplay. Rob Dickinson packs away the bruising guitar riffs and returns with a positively grown-up solo debut. Optimism and innocence streak through stately piano ballads, woozy strings and jingle-jangle acoustic guitars take the place of white-noise, and Dickinson's voice settles into an affecting falsetto. If ever a slice of modern rock music deserved the adjective deep, Dickinson's, Fresh Wine for the Horses, is it. This album succeeds on many levels, earning its stars - 12 Chicago Sun-Times.
