The duo is known for obscuring the boundaries between acoustic instrumentation and electronics. Air Museum is also their first record that was made in a studio. Working in the studio expanded their possibilities, giving more room for experimentation. The continuing power of drone as a combination of soothing and aggressive force - in whatever balance the creators and, perhaps, the listeners, want - defines a strain of rock-as-such continually, something Mountains had demonstrated a number of times over their releases prior to Air Museum. For their second album on Thrill Jockey, Mountains - Brooklyn's Koen Holtcamp and Brendon Anderegg - move into more explicitly electronic territory. Instead of processing their acoustic instruments digitally, with software, they availed themselves of a pallet of pedals and modular synthesizers. Up through 2009's Choral, Mountains used home computer software to transform their acoustic instrumentation, which runs the gamut from spindly guitars and pianos to suffusing cellos, accordions, and melodicas. But for Air Museum, they headed into a Brooklyn studio with an analog arsenal of pedals and modular synthesizers to record in real time. The result is a newfound energy and dynamism that comes at a price. At their best, Mountains balance their systems so delicately that different layers float seamlessly to the top at different times. If Mountains deservedly rose to prominence with the critical acclaim of 2009s Choral, then Air Museum should cement that praise. This album is a serious triumph. Read full review.
